BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Kentucky in 1827, William H. Taylor grew up at Harrodsburg.  He went to Missouri as a young man, where he married Mary Blakie in 1848.  They lived in Missouri for several years before traveling to Nebraska City, Nebraska, around 1857.  Taylor worked as an attorney and land agent before getting involved in politics.  He served in the Territorial Legislature from 1858 until 1862.  In 1862 Taylor was a candidate for Congress, but he was defeated by Samuel G. Daily.

After his political defeat in 1862, Taylor focused his energy on business.  He was one of the incorporators of the South Nebraska Railroad, and he served as a commissioner for the Union Pacific Railroad.  In the spring of 1865, Taylor sold much of his property and in June he left on a steamboat with his family.  William H. Taylor died at Louisville, Kentucky, on June 23, 1865.  He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
