Chadron, Dawes County, Neb.:  Methodist Church

Size:  8 volumes and 3 items on 1 reel of microfilm

BACKGROUND NOTE

Methodist Pastor Joel B. Gray began preaching at Dakota Junction in the fall of 1884. In August of 1885 the first lots in the present site of Chadron were sold and a Methodist Society was formally organized the following month. At first the Methodists met in the newly-erected Congregational Church, then in the skating rink, then in the courtroom.

The first church building was dedicated on April 3, 1887. In 1910 an addition was made. In the 1920s the old parsonage became a community house with classroom space. The continuing growth of the congregation made an expansion of facilities necessary. Ground was broken for the present church building in 1951. It was consecrated in 1952 and the building with the parsonage dedicated in May of 1957.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection of the records of the United Methodist Church of Chadron, Nebraska, consists of eight volumes, two pamphlets, and loose pages of minutes on one reel of microfilm, arranged in three series: 1) Record Books, 1884-1982; 2) Minutes, 1948-1950, 1953-1963; and 3) Church Histories.

The Record Books through 1953 contain lists of pastors, members, probationers, baptisms, and marriages. Since then, there are membership rolls kept alphabetically by household. Also included is a record book for the Wayside, Nebraska, Methodist Episcopal Church for the years 1928-1931. There are minutes of the monthly board meetings, 1948-1950, and 1953-1963. Brief histories of the church are contained in booklets produced for the consecration of the present building in 1952 and its dedication in 1957.

These records were loaned for microfilming in July of 1982.
