HISTORICAL NOTE

St. Peter’s Reformed Church was founded on April 10, 1873, by German and Swiss settlers. There was no town in the immediate vicinity, but there was a post office at Headland, 3 1/2 miles southeast of the present site of Yutan in Saunders County. The Rev. Frederick Hullhorst came from Columbus, Nebraska, to be the minister in 1873, a post he held until 1907. Rev. Hullhorst bought forty acres of land near Headland where he built a home; three years later he rebuilt in the newly platted town of Clear Creek. During the late 1870s and early 1880s, he studied medicine at Iowa City during the winter months and became a physician to serve the community in yet another way.

The congregation met in homes until the Clear Creek Schoolhouse was erected in 1876. The cornerstone for the church was laid in 1880, and the structure was completed in 1882. The church was damaged in a tornado in 1913, but was rebuilt in that same year.
