BACKGROUND NOTE



Sidney W. Chapman was born in Connecticut on August 26, 1831.  In 1850 he was living in Geneva, Ohio.  He attended Bryant, Spencer, Lusk & Stratton’s Mercantile College in Cleveland, Ohio in 1855.  In 1865 he was working in Chicago, Illinois, as a freight agent for the New York Central Railroad.  By 1870 he was living in Bushnell, Illinois, with his wife Helen, and their four children.  Chapman was working as a lumber merchant at that time.  The Chapman family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1875.  Sidney worked as the general freight agent of the Midland Pacific Railroad Company, and later served as agent of the American Express company.  He died in Lincoln on March 5, 1903 and is buried in Wyuka Cemetery.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of five volumes of letterpress books and three volumes of financial records relating to the business activities of Sidney W. Chapman.  The letterpress books date from 1875 to 1904.  The financial ledgers date from 1900 to 1910.  The collection relates to the various personal and business activities of Sidney W. Chapman.
