BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



Sarah Jane Price was born in Rushville, Indiana, on October 10, 1841. She came to Nebraska in 1871 and settled near Phillips in Hamilton County, where she taught school and farmed. Miss Price died in the summer of 1922.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection relates to the life of Sarah Jane Price, and is arranged in three Series: 1) Diaries, 1878-1895; 2) School Notes and Exercises, n.d.; and 3) Family History materials. The bulk of the collection consists of diaries, Series 1, recording the daily life of Jane Price from 1878 through 1895, including her experiences as a public school teacher and Sunday School teacher in Hamilton County, Nebraska, remarks about the weather, and comments about her friends and neighbors. The diary of September 1884-December 1885 [vol. 5, pages 91-97], contains recollections about her mother. A transcript version of this “Recollection” is located at the end of folder 14. Also included is an account of a summer journey to Rome, Italy, which featured stops in Cincinnati, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The year of this trip is not known. The School Notes and Exercises volume of Series 2 contains poetry, prose, and a few recipes, etc. Some family history materials, Series 3, have been added to the collection.



Note:  The original diaries and school notes are very fragile and have been restricted for preservation. Researchers are asked to use the transcripts and photocopies provided in Box 2.
