BACKGROUND NOTE



Sarah Ann Olds, daughter of Courtland and Catherine Olds, was born at Port Dover, Ontario, Canada, on January 24, 1834.  She married her cousin, Benjamin E. Olds, on December 31, 1855 at Port Dover.  Their daughter Alice was born on October 12, 1856.  Benjamin died on July 23, 1858.  After Benjamin’s death, Sarah Ann married Chester Stillman Johnson.  They came to Nebraska around 1865 and homesteaded in Nemaha County before moving to the village of Old Wyoming (later called Dresden) in Otoe County, Nebraska.  The couple would have seven children in addition to Sarah’s daughter Alice.  Chester Johnson died in Otoe County on June 29, 1879.  After his death in 1879, Sarah took up another homestead in Wheeler County, Nebraska.  Sarah Ann (Olds) Johnson died at the home of her daughter Alice near Elgin, Nebraska, on April 9, 1901.  She is buried next to her second husband in Cowles Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one box of letters written to Sarah Ann (Olds) Johnson between 1857 and 1887.  The first half of the letters were mostly written by Sarah’s relatives in Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada.  The last half of the letters were mostly written to Sarah by her married daughters.  Typed transcripts of the letters are included with the originals.  The collection also contains a small amount of genealogical information regarding the Olds and Johnson families.
