BACKGROUND NOTE



Rachel Lawton, daughter of Orin and Mary Lawton, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 7, 1865.  She married Newton S. Shannon in 1888, and by 1900, the couple was living in Hastings, Nebraska.  By 1910, the couple had moved to Missouri.  Rachel (Lawton) Shannon died in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 12, 1930.  She is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one item, a scrapbook compiled by Rachel (Lawton) Shannon.  The contents of the scrapbook consist almost entirely of newspaper clippings relating to politics.  Many of the clippings relate to William Jennings Bryan’s political campaigns in 1896, 1903 and 1924.  Also included is a loose letter from Mary (Baird) Bryan thanking Mrs. Shannon for sending her a photograph of William Jennings Bryan.  The letter is undated.
