BACKGROUND NOTE



R. Emmett Britt was born September 11, 1891, in Adams County, Nebraska. He attended country school near Pauline until 1904 when his family moved to Franklin County, Nebraska. He graduated from school there in 1910, married in 1912, and continued to live in Franklin County until 1975, except for two brief periods when he lived in Colorado and Kansas. He and his wife, Emeline, moved to Albany, Oregon, in 1975 to be near their daughter, Gertrude and her family.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection of manuscript material consists of two reels of microfilm containing thirteen diaries dating from 1964-1970. These diaries document R. Emmett Britt’s day-to-day life in Franklin County, Nebraska. Britt writes mainly about how his leisure time is spent, errands he is working on, trips taken, some observations about the Nebraska political scene and weather conditions. A few remembrances about his early life are sometimes included. Also included are childhood reminiscences of Britt’s relating to Hall, Adams, and Franklin Counties, Nebraska. The reminiscences (unfilmed) include information about a visit by train to South Dakota in 1903.



The diaries were loaned for microfilming by R. Emmett Britt in 1975-1977.
