Records:  1942-1946

Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska:  Organization for the support of Omahans in the Marine Corps during World War II

Size:  1 reel of microfilm

BACKGROUND NOTE

The Omaha Marine Dad’s Club was formed in early 1942 by a number of fathers of Omaha, Nebraska, having sons serving in the United States Marine Corps. In September of 1942 the organization became incorporated and obtained a charter from the Secretary of State of Nebraska.  The purpose of the club was to render any possible service to its members’ sons who were fighting in the Corps, and also their families. Some of these services included sending “care” packages; cards at Christmas, Easter and birthdays; sponsoring fund raising activities; and expressing condolences to families whose sons died while serving their country. The club disbanded in 1946.  The Omaha Marine Dad’s Club was one of a considerable number of Marine father’s clubs organized in connection with US Marine Corps League detachments across the country. However, most were on a much smaller scale and lacked the organizational skills of the Omaha club.

The materials in this collection relate to the operation of the Omaha Marine Dad’s Club, Inc. The organizational records in Series 1 are typical of any small club. However, the publication of the organization’s newsletter, Scuttlebutt, in Series 2 shows some of the sophistication of the club. This newsletter, which was sent to Marines stationed throughout the world, contained news of Omaha and the region. Series 3 includes the club’s correspondence and contains some heartwarming letters from the Marines for which the club was organized. Series 4 shows the painstaking record keeping involved with special events the club planned. Finally, Series 5 contains a great deal of ephemera such as US Marine Corps stickers, publications and newspaper clippings.

These materials were loaned for microfilming on November 21, 1988. Originals are housed with the Douglas County Historical Society, Omaha, Nebraska.
