SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of correspondence relating to the Omaha Bridge and Terminal Railway Company and its interests in a bridge between Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The majority of the correspondence dates from 1902-1909 and discusses whether the bridge should be open to pedestrian and street traffic as well as rail traffic. Most of the correspondence was sent to U.S. Representative from Council Bluffs, Iowa, Walter I. Smith by various interested parties trying to influence his decision to support or oppose the bridge bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. Some of the interested parties represented include the Omaha Bridge and Terminal Railway Company, the East Omaha Land Company, and the Commercial Committee of Council Bluffs. The correspondence also discusses steamship navigation on the Missouri River and rail traffic from various railroads including the Union Pacific Railway Company, the Illinois Central Railway Company, and the Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Suburban Railway Company.
