BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in Indiana on April 29, 1843, Nancy Cox moved with her family to Iowa in the 1850s.  By 1870, Nancy was married to James Alfred Garton and living in Richardson County, Nebraska.  By 1880, the couple had moved to Saline County, Nebraska.  James Garton died in 1908.  Nancy (Cox) Garton died at De Witt, Nebraska, on August 20, 1929.  The couple is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery at De Witt, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of the reminiscences of Nancy Garton (Mrs. Alf Garton) of Dewitt, Saline County, Nebraska. The reminiscences cover the years 1864-1868 and describe early pioneer experiences in Saline County, Nebraska. They describe grasshopper infestations, hail storms, and floods. The reminiscences also include information about the Cox and Garton families.
