BACKGROUND NOTE



Otto Mutz was born in Iowa on October 16, 1855.  He married Ella Russell in 1876 and they would have seven children.  Otto served in the Nebraska Senate from 1897-1899 out of Springview, Nebraska.  He died October 18, 1926, and is buried in Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln.



Sterling F. Mutz, son of Otto and Ella Mutz, was born March 31, 1888 at Burton, Nebraska.  He married Jessie Clarke, and the couple would have two children.  Sterling worked as a lawyer in Lincoln for most of his life.  He died on February 20, 1966, and is buried in Wyuka Cemetery.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one folder of correspondence sent to Otto, Sterling and Jessie Mutz.  The letters date from 1876-1941 and include letters from Senator George W. Norris and Iowa painter Grant Wood.  The Norris letter discusses his interest in changing the Nebraska Legislature to a one body or Unicameral system.



Note:  The original Grant Wood letters are restricted for preservation.  Researchers are asked to use the reference copies provided.
