HISTORY NEBRASKA MANUSCRIPT FINDING AID

RG3570.AM:  Murphy Family

Genealogical records

Nebraska

Size:  0.25 cu.ft.; 1 box and 2 reels of microfilm

BACKGROUND NOTE

The Murphy family of Nebraska has a long recorded history.  Like many other Irish families, the Murphys began to emigrate to the New World in approximately 1830 largely because of the (1) oppression of the absentee landlords who forced many Irish tenants off the land and because (2) of the general Protestant “ascendency” in Ireland.  After first settling in Canada, the family began to disperse south through out the United States.  A large number settled in the mid-west.  Among the first members of this family to come to Nebraska was the Michael Murphy family which settled in Richardson County in 1874.  Later, various members of the family moved to western Nebraska.

Two of the Nebraska members of the Murphy lineage who gained national recognition are Bradford Murphy of Denver, Colorado, and M. Louis Murphy of New York City.  Both received their education at the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Medical School and are well-known physicians.
