BACKGROUND NOTE



Mary Elizabeth Baird, daughter of Cyrus and Sarah Baird, was born in Ohio on May 11, 1855.  The family moved to Nebraska in 1868, and Mary Elizabeth married Aaron S. Raymond in Lincoln, Nebraska, on December 19, 1877.  Aaron worked as a druggist in Lincoln.  The Raymonds lived in Lincoln the rest of their lives.  Aaron Raymond died in 1922 and Mary Elizabeth died on April 5, 1934.  Both are buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one folder containing reminiscences of Mary Elizabeth (Baird) Raymond written in 1929 and 1933.  The reminiscences describe her years in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1868 to around 1900.  She discusses Lincoln’s years as a frontier outpost and the experiences and pastimes of its earliest settlers.  She gives detailed accounts of her wedding, attending the University of Nebraska, membership in various clubs, etc.
