SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of three diaries (and transcripts) kept by Martha Janney, wife of a Methodist Episcopal missionary in Cuming County, Nebraska. The diaries date from 1865-1873, and in them Janney writes about her daily life, as well as what is happening with the religious missions in the area, particularly the Dewitt Mission (Cuming County, Nebraska) and her husband’s part in them. The diaries mention a seminary fire in 1865, her husband going to the Wood River Circuit in 1867, and a “perfect” blizzard in November of 1868. The diaries also include various recipes for home remedies.
