BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



M. T. Cummings was born in Iowa in 1861 or 1862 and educated in Nebraska. He appears in the 1894 Nebraska Gazetteer as a Beatrice, Nebraska coal and grain dealer. He was in this business in the Beatrice and Lincoln areas until 1922, when he moved to York. He left York in 1934 when he moved to Drayton, North Dakota in order to take over a dairy. On November 8. 1941 at the age of eighty, he was found dead in a Minneapolis, Minnesota hotel room.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one speech dating from 1909. The speech entitled, “The Business Man and the Library,” and in typescript form, was delivered by M. T. Cummings at the 1909 annual meeting of the Nebraska State Library Association. In the speech, Cummings discusses the benefits of a liberal education and the loftier calling of the librarian in supplying books to the public that should be read.
