Marguerette R. Burke, daughter of George and Rose (Rickly) Burke, was born on September 10, 1885.  The family was living in Douglas County, Nebraska in 1900.  Marguerette attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, receiving a B.A. from the College of Literature, Science & Arts in June of 1909.  She was teaching in the Lincoln public schools in 1910, and then by 1914 she was teaching in Omaha.  She spent the rest of her career teaching in Omaha.  Marguerette Burke died on April 20, 1978 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha, Nebraska.


This collection consists of papers compiled by Marguerette Burke.  The first half of the collection consists mostly of biographical or genealogical information on various Burke, Rickly and associated family members.  The second half of the collection consists mostly of subject files compiled by Burke.  Included are files on the Omaha Stockyards, Omaha Central High School, Columbus Cemetery Association, Elkhorn River flooding, etc.  One folder contains a manuscript draft for Burke’s Nebraska History article, “Henry James Hudson and the Genoa Settlement.”  The materials in the collection date from 1861 to 1963.
