BACKGROUND NOTE



Born on July 27, 1893, Margaret Eleanor Long was the daughter of Dr. Francis A. Long and Margaret (Miller) Long.  She graduated from the Madison High School, Madison, Nebraska, in 1910, and received her B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Nebraska in 1914.  She married James W. Whisenand sometime around 1918-1920 and moved to Peoria, Illinois.  The couple had three children, John, Margaret and Alice.  Margaret (Long) Whisenand died in November of 1968.  She is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Madison, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of two boxes of papers relating to Margaret (Long) Whisenand and the Long family.  The bulk of this collection consists of memorabilia collected by Margaret Long relating to her life and activities, as well as those of members of the Long family.  Included are materials relating to the Madison, Nebraska High School, 1903-1920; the University of Nebraska, 1906-1914; the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Francis A. Long’s medical career in Madison, Nebraska, 1932; and a scrapbook of Emma R. Miller, Margaret Long’s aunt.  She was a teacher at West Point, Nebraska, and later became the Superintendent of Schools for Cuming County.  Also included are various financial records of Margaret’s sister, Frances Long, and a scrapbook containing articles about home decorating.
