Records:  1907-1986

Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska:  Professional organization

Size: 1.5 cu.ft.; 2 boxes

On March 13, 1932, a group of 53 librarians of Lincoln, Nebraska, met in order to form a library organization.  They applied to the American Library Association for permission to establish a local chapter in Lincoln.  Approval came on April 25, 1932, and the Library Chapter of the American Library Association was begun.  Its objectives were “to promote acquaintance and cooperation among Lincoln librarians and increase interest in state and national library service.”

In 1954, the American Library Association dissolved its local chapters saying that states were authorized to establish local chapters.  The Lincoln chapter then became simply the Lincoln Library Association.

This collection consists of two boxes of records of the Lincoln Library Association dating from 1907-1986.  The first box is arranged into four series:  1) Minutes, 1907-1961; 2) Membership lists (Directories, 1916-1968); 3) Correspondence, 1932-1957; and 4) Miscellany, 1932-1964.  The second box of records was added in 2011 and is unprocessed.

This material relates to the history and membership of the Lincoln Library Association of Lincoln, Nebraska.

The minutes, 1907-1960, of Series 1 record instructive and social events held by the Lincoln Library Association.  Officers, committee appointments, and topics discussed are provided.  Also included is a volume of minutes of the Lincoln Library Club, a forerunner of the Lincoln Library Association.  This earlier organization formed in 1907 had been organized “to promote library interests in and about the city of Lincoln.”  A record of dues paid in the Lincoln Library Club is also shown.

Series 2 contains Membership Lists (Directories) 1916-1968, of the Lincoln Library Association.  Names of officers and members, addresses, phone numbers, and place of employment is shown.  Also included are lists of past presidents, committees, and Nebraska Library Association and Lincoln Library Club membership.

The Correspondence, 1932-1957, of Series 3 concentrates primarily on the organizational period of the Lincoln Library Association, when it was officially called the Lincoln Chapter of the American Library Association.  Correspondence between the Lincoln chapter and the American Library Association shows the chapter’s gradual development.  Also discussed are officers in the organization and events at the group’s meetings.

The Miscellany of Series 4 includes copies of the Lincoln Library Association’s constitution, with drafts and revisions, 1932-1960.  Also provided is publicity in the form of newspaper clippings and program announcements, 1939-1964, showing the Lincoln Library Association’s plans and programs.
