BACKGROUND NOTE

The purpose of the United Service Organizations (U.S.O.) is to provide support for the spiritual, religious, social, welfare and educational needs of the men and women in the Armed Forces.  During World War II, Lincoln had an active U.S.O. located on the first floor of the Rudge and Guenzel Building.  At the end of World War II, the Lincoln U.S.O. closed.  With the beginning of the Korean Conflict, Lincoln reactivated their U.S.O.  On March 16, 1954, a U.S.O. drop-in center opened at the Y.M.C.A.

On August 21, 1955, the Lincoln U.S.O. formally opened a new club located at 1402 P Street.  In January of 1956, the U.S.O., which had operated as a community project, became a YWCA affiliate and operation of the center/club was taken over by the U.S.O. Division of the YWCA national board, one of the six member agencies of the national U.S.O.
