BACKGROUND NOTE



Laura E. Thomas Thorpe was the oldest of five children. She taught school in Syracuse Precinct, Otoe County, Nebraska, up to the time she married Edmund S. Thorpe and moved to Missouri. This collection contains a reminiscence written by Laura about her experiences teaching and living in Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of a letter and a reminiscence written by Laura E. Thomas Thorpe. The letter, 1875, contains descriptions of Laura’s school experiences, and commentary on grasshoppers and relief efforts in Nebraska. Although it is unclear when she wrote the manuscript, Laura begins with her earliest memories in 1859 and continues through 1874, a period that includes her childhood and teenage years. The reminiscence contains information about pioneer life, education, religion, travel, settlement, and social events. Only a transcript of the reminiscence is available at the Nebraska State Historical Society. The original manuscript of “Recollections” is in the collections of the Indiana State Historical Society.
