BACKGROUND NOTE



Joshua C. Lippincott, son of Joseph and Ann (Coles) Lippincott, was born in New Jersey on March 7, 1811.  He married Mildred Wood on September 19, 1839, in Chesterfield County, Virginia.  They lived in Indiana for a number of years, and then in 1857, they moved to Washington County, Nebraska.  The 1860 census lists his occupation as carriage maker.  Later he is listed as a farmer.  Lippincott also served as the postmaster of Cuming City and proprietor of the Half-way House, a stage station and hotel between Omaha and Decatur, Nebraska.  Joshua C. Lippincott died on February 10, 1897 and is buried in the Blair Cemetery at Blair, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one box containing correspondence, bills, receipts, account books and other legal and financial papers.  The material in this collection relates to Joshua Lippincott’s activities as postmaster of Cuming City and proprietor of the Half-way House.  The correspondence consists largely of letters sent to Lippincott from relatives and business acquaintances.  Lippincott took care of the land holdings of absentee owners.  Correspondents include:  Ekriam L. Coles, 1860; Thomas L. Griffey, 1866; Joab Sauder, 1872-1873; Edmund D. Turner, 1867-1870; and Jacob Wiseman, 1859-1861.  The Cuming City Post Office records include auditor’s reports and accounts of newspapers and periodicals received between 1871 and 1872.
