John Simon Kroh, son of Courtney and Emma (Schnebly) Kroh, was born in Maryland on January 25, 1874.  According to census records, Kroh was living in Iowa in 1895 and by 1910 was working in Chicago, Illinois, as a salesman.  By 1920 he had married Nellie Snyder.  From 1918 to 1944 Kroh served as the publisher of the Keith County News in Ogallala, Nebraska.  He served in the Nebraska State Senate from 1923-1925 and was the past president of the Nebraska Press Association.  John Simon Kroh died in 1952 and is buried in the Ogallala Cemetery at Ogallala, Nebraska.


This collection consists of two boxes of papers relating to John Simon Kroh’s political and newspaper career.  The bulk of the collection consists of speeches and addresses delivered by John S. Kroh to Rotary Clubs, Elks groups, high school commencement exercise, and other civic and social gatherings.  Subject matter is of a political, social, and moral nature.  Also included are various quotes and anecdotes used as source materials for his speeches, as well as correspondence, clippings about Kroh’s political career and clippings about the transfer of Arbor Lodge to the state of Nebraska.  Materials in the collection date from 1923 to 1952.
