BACKGROUND NOTE



John H. Kellom was born in New York in 1817.  By the mid-late 1850s he was living in Omaha, Nebraska.  According to census records and city directories, Kellom worked in several occupations including as an assessor and insurance agent as well as real estate dealer. He also served in several government offices including as City Alderman and City Treasurer, as well as U.S. Postmaster at Omaha.  He also served as president of the Omaha Public Library.  Kellom stayed in Omaha through the early-mid 1880s and then apparently moved to California.  He died in California in 1891.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one folder containing fourteen letters John H. Kellom of Omaha to Calvin Pomeroy of East Bloomfield, New York.  The letters date from 1861-1865 and discuss various topics including the building of the railroad, local politics and elections, costs for property and building supplies, etc.
