BACKGROUND NOTE



Born at Postville, Iowa, on May 3, 1868, John Charles Bruce spent much of his life as a land and real estate agent living in Laurel, Nebraska.  He married Amelia Ulm at Norfolk, Nebraska, on January 31, 1893.  John C. Bruce died on January 2, 1956.  He is buried in the Laurel Cemetery at Laurel, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one folder containing correspondence received by John C. Bruce.  The letters date from 1900-1901.  The bulk of the letters come from J.Q. Adams, president of the Adams & Floete Company, Western Lands, of Chicago, Illinois.  Other correspondents include Irving Welch of the Charles Mix Land Company, Platte, South Dakota, and Henry Harding, manager of the German American Land Company at Sioux City, Iowa.  The material in this collection relates to John Charles Bruce’s activities as a land agent and contains material relative to the social and economic history of both Nebraska and South Dakota.
