BACKGROUND NOTE

Hudson Josiah Winnett was born at Bealsville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on April 21, 1846.  He attended the Jefferson Medical School at Philadelphia in 1869-1870, and transferred to the Long Island College Hospital.  He practiced in the East for 10 years, until his health forced him to move west.  He ranched near Sydney, Nebraska, until 1884 when he felt his health had improved enough to allow him to return to his practice.  After two more years of study, he returned to Lincoln where he received his license to practice in Nebraska.  In 1891, he joined the Nebraska State Medical Society and remained active in that organization until his death.

In 1897, he was elected to the Lincoln City Council, and in 1898 was president of that body.  He was elected mayor of Lincoln in 1899 and was reelected to serve until 1903.  In 1906, Dr. Winnett was elected to the State Railway Commission for a six-year term, and retired from his medical practice at that time.  In addition to these activities, Dr. Winnett had extensive interests in real estate and sheep raising.  He died in 1918.
