BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in Cook County, Illinois, on June 21, 1875, Howard W. Crandall came to Nebraska with his parents in 1884.  The family settled in Knox County where they farmed.  Crandall married Clara Bonge at Niobrara, Nebraska, on September 1, 1897.  The couple had two children, Lorena and Leonard.  Crandall farmed for a number of years before serving as County Treasurer.  He went on to work for several banks, including the banks at Winnetoon and Surprise, Nebraska.  Howard and Clara eventually moved to Vancouver, Washington.  Howard W. Crandall died on November 27, 1972.  Clara (Bonge) Crandall died on July 5, 1975.  Both are buried in Old Vancouver City Cemetery.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one folder containing a photocopy of a 100-page reminiscence by Howard W. Crandall.  He wrote the reminiscence in 1957.  The reminiscence covers the time period 1884-1957.  Crandall describes the family settling in Knox County, Nebraska, in 1884; planting trees and raising crops and livestock on the farm; the births of his siblings; the blizzard of 1888; various local happenings; and his marriage to Clara Bonge.  The reminiscence goes on to document the births of Crandall’s children; his work as County Treasurer; the 1918 influenza pandemic; bank failures and economic conditions during the Great Depression; and taking a job at the bank in Surprise, Nebraska.  The reminiscence also has sections on hunting and wildlife, early schools, farming and drought, the court system at the time, and various other stories and anecdotes.
