Herbert Elmer Gooch established the Gooch Milling & Elevator Company at Fifth and South Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1908. Capacity of the milling operation expanded over the years, and in 1939, J.J. Vanier & Associates of Salina, Kansas, purchased Gooch’s Mill. The mill continued to operate under the Gooch name and sold numerous varieties of flour, pasta and bread. By 1960, Gooch’s had a four million-bushel-capacity elevator system. Arthur Daniels Midland (ADM) purchased the Gooch Milling property in 1970.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of two folders containing twenty-six Billie Oakley recipe newsletters produced by Martha Gooch Kitchens. Billie Oakley had a homemaking show on KMA radio in Shenandoah, Iowa, and she became Gooch Foods’ consumer director in 1965. The newsletters contain numerous recipes and advertisements for Martha Gooch products. Each newsletters also contains an introductory message from Billie Oakley that promotes different Martha Gooch products each month. The bulk of the newsletters date from 1971 to 1972, with a few earlier issues.
