The Congregational Church was organized at a meeting in Thedford, Nebraska, on February 3, 1899. Services were held first in the schoolhouse and then in the courthouse until a church building was erected in 1907. The original building was replaced by a new one begun in 1946 and completed nine years later. In 1960 the congregation formally accepted the constitution of the United Church of Christ which was formed from a merger of Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
These records of the Thedford, Nebraska, First Congregational United Church of Christ are contained on one reel of microfilm and arranged in two series: 1) Records, 1899-1976; and 2) Annual Reports, 1963-1975.
Series 1 contains three volumes. The first volume is a register of members, pastors, officers, baptisms, funerals, and marriages for the years 1899-1950. This volume also contains minutes of the annual meeting of the congregation, meetings of the Board of Trustees, and special meetings from 1899 to 1919 as well as a journal of events. From 1920 to 1945 only minutes of the annual meeting are included. The second volume of this series is a register for 1950-1976 and includes minutes of meetings held during that same period. Volume Three contains the minutes of the Church Council, 1961-1976.
Series 2 includes the Annual Reports, 1963-1975, for the Thomas County Parish of the United Church of Christ, which includes churches at Thedford, Halsey, and Seneca. The report for 1970 is missing.
These records were loaned for microfilming in September of 1976.
