Daniel Benjamin Cleghorn was born in New York state in 1827.  He fought in the Mexican War, and made the trip to California in 1849.  He may have operated a mill at McGregor, Iowa from 1857-1860, when he entered the freighting business.  Cleghorn served in Co. L., 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry, from January 31, 1862 until 1865.  After the war, he remained at Fort Scott, Kansas where he had been stationed.  In the 1870s he moved his family to Dennison, Texas where he reopened his freighting business.  In 1877 he moved to the Dakota Territory, settling about three miles from Rapid City, South Dakota, at a place that came to be called Cleghorn Springs.  He died there in 1879.


This collection consists of one box of papers relating to Daniel Benjamin Cleghorn.  The collection contains a diary, scrapbook, biographical information and a sheet containing recipes for preparing liquors.  The diary in this collection relates to a freighting trip from McGregor, Iowa to Denver, Colorado.  Dates indicate that this trip was made in 1861.  Included with the diary is a typed transcript and a school essay about the diary.  The scrapbook dates from 1851 to 1879 and contains letters of reference, deeds, financial records, a small amount of correspondence, receipts, widow’s claim for a pension, a copy of a segment of a diary and some clippings.  The biographical information consists of a few short typed pages about Daniel Benjamin Cleghorn.  The last item is a page showing recipes for making various kinds of liquor.
