Clifton Wharton, born in Pennsylvania, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army in October of 1818. A career officer, Wharton had attained the rank of lieutenant Colonel shortly before his death on July 13, 1847.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of a journal (photostatic copy and typed transcript) of a march of the 1st Regiment of Dragoons under the command of Major Wharton in 1844. The journal relates the events of the peace keeping mission from Fort Leavenworth to the Pawnee villages on the Republican river, and to the tribes of the Otoe, Pottawatamie, Iowa, and the Sauk Indians on the Missouri River. Recorded are description of terrain, weather and hardships encountered during the mission. This journal was published in the Kansas Historical Quarterly, Volume 16, 1923-1925.
