BACKGROUND NOTE



Charles B. Gregory, son of Rev. Lewis and Elisabeth (Buckingham) Gregory, was born June 17, 1870 at Amesbury, Massachusetts.  In 1876 the Gregory family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Rev. Gregory became pastor of the First Congregational Church.  Charles Gregory graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1891 and became manager of the Lincoln Coal Company the same year.  He was manager of several other coal companies, including the Gregory Coal Company, with offices at 1044 O Street and yard at 14th & Y Streets.  He was also cashier of the American Savings Bank and about 1920 established the Motor Inn Garage, which he operated until he moved to Chicago in 1933.  Gregory married Freda Miner in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 11, 1905.  Charles B. Gregory died in Chicago in 1937.  He is buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska, along with his wife and parents.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of the records of the Gregory family arranged in two subgroups and nine series.  Subgroup 1:  Records of the Gregory Coal Company is divided into five series:  1) Letterpress books, 1894-1902; 2) Ledgers, 1893-1908; 3) Journals, 1902-1909; 4) Trial Balance books, 1899-1920 and 5) Day Books, 1907.  Subgroup 2:  Records of C.B. and Lewis Gregory is divided into four series:  1) Letterpress books, 1895-1898; 2) Ledgers, 1893-1898; 3) Journals 1895-1908 and 4) American Savings Banks Records, 1894-1902.



This collection relates to the business affairs and private holdings of Charles and Lewis Gregory.  In addition to coal company affairs the Gregorys were involved in numerous real estate holdings, expenses for which are enumerated in Subgroup 2.
