BACKGROUND NOTE



Hazel Carpenter, daughter of William J. and Frank A. (Smith) Carpenter, was born November 17, 1896.  She married George A. Colburn in Lincoln, Nebraska, on November 18, 1914.  The Carpenters farmed in Webster County, near Guide Rock and then Blue Hill.  George Colburn died October 20, 1955.  Hazel Colburn died on June 6, 1997.  The Colburns had three children, one son died in infancy.  Their son, Cecil, was born in 1915 and died July 31, 1963.  Their daughter, Nina Marie, was born in 1917 and died on October 23, 1997.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of two boxes of papers relating to members of the Carpenter and Colburn families based in Blue Hill, Nebraska.  The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to Hazel (Carpenter) Colburn and her daughter, Nina Colburn.  Also included are school, club and training materials, as well as information on various other Carpenter and Colburn family members.  The materials in the collection date from ca. 1912 to 1997 with the bulk dating after 1950.
