BACKGROUND NOTE

Arts Are Basic (AAB) is an aesthetic education program based in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Started in 1989, the program encourages participating teachers to work with visual or performing artists to develop classroom curriculum for their students.  The program is currently (as of 2017) administered through Doane University.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one binder of materials relating to a 2002 Arts Are Basic project at Pound Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Students explored the Harlem Renaissance through doing research, writing poetry, working with a graphic artist and creating quilt blocks.  The binder was submitted as documentation for the 2002 Spotlight Award.  Also included is the book, “Harlem,” a Poem by Walter Dean Myers.  Students attended a live production of “Harlem” at the Lied Center, where their quilts were also displayed.

Note:  The Nebraska History Museum collection holds quilts made by Pound Middle School students for the 2002 Arts Are Basic project.
