Almira May Payne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Payne, was born in Odell, Gage County, Nebraska, on April 19, 1880. She was married to John W. Drake at Odell on March 21, 1901. This marriage produced nine sons and five daughters, three of the children dying in infancy. In 1905 the Drakes moved to Esbon, Kansas, and later settled in O’Neill, Holt County, Nebraska. In the fall of 1921, they moved to Western, Saline County, where they resided until 1940 when they moved to Lincoln. Almira Mae Drake died in Lincoln, Nebraska, on July 24, 1948.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box containing correspondence dating from 1907 and 1919-1943. The material relates to the family life of Almira Mae Drake, farm wife in O’Neill and Western, Nebraska. The Drake letters convey family news and provide information on farm tasks carried on by the men of the family and chores undertaken by the women. Information on farm productivity and income received is sometimes provided. A typescript of the letters with an introduction by Cindy Drake is included. All letters are photocopies made from the originals.
